It’s morning and I don’t want to be writing. I want to be snuggling in bed reading my tome. Currently, I’m reading London by Edward Rutherford. It’s over 800 pages long. I love long books and long movies. But I am not reading. I am writing.

Last night I had two new women in class to replace the two that left. I hope these two stay. It would be nice to see everyone graduate and go on to productive lives. Suddenly these women mean so much to me. One of the women I’m going to call M&M because she has platinum hair and a gorgeous face, like Marilynn Monroe. The other I haven’t figured out a name for yet, although I’m leaning towards Sista Nancy because we talked about Sister Nancy’s music last night. I love Sister Nancy. She’s a dub queen from Jamaica.

We had fun last night. Everyone stayed in the kitchen for once and we all cut veggies and cooked and laughed. I was a little stressed out before class because I had tried several times during the week to contact someone at the house to find out what they have in the way of food but no one would call me back. Finally, Friday morning, I contacted the program director who gave me the cell# for one of the house mothers. So I called her and she told me what they had. So everything was last minute and I was a little nervous about it all working out. Alas, everything always works out with food. First rule of cooking: Everything always works out. When you remember that, you can do anything in the kitchen.

We made fajitas. They had a bunch of frozen ground turkey, bell peppers, onions and mushrooms and tortillas so we made fajitas. They were delish! Then we talked about what we all were going to do after dinner. They were all going to watch a scary movie together, Drag Me To Hell. Little Bird surprised me when she said, “Sam Raimi directed it. That’s not his usual genre so I’ll be curious to see what he does with this.” It was such a sophisticated thing to say about a horror film. And she knew Sam Raimi. I don’t know why I was surprised that she knew who Sam Raimi was or that it was a little unusual for him to direct a horror film, although not that unusual because that’s the genre he started in. I was impressed with her. Little Bird has two grown children and started doing crack in her mid-thirties. She had only been drinking up to that point but then was turned onto crack and started hooking for her addiction. And somehow in the middle of all that, she found time to keep up with the latest goings on of movie directors. Maybe not so unusual for this town. Welcome to LA.

During our conversation about horror films Mama, apparently back on her meds, mentioned Saw V. I said, “Now that’s torture porn. I don’t like that kind of stuff.” And she said that it has a really powerful and meaningful story. I was like, “Are you serious?” She said the story is about this guy who tries to break people of their addictions and bad habits by making them face their worst nightmares, usually involving their addictions. If they can overcome them, they are free. If they break, they break…hard. Again, impressed. I had no idea someone put so much thought into Saw V. Who knew?Lest ye judge. I’m such a big judger. I love that Mama loves scary movies. I went on the IMDB website and read the synopsis for the Saw V and it does have a little bit of that sense that it is trying to make people stop doing bad things but it’s still pretty tortury pornish. Each to his own.

I had to end the class early because I went to a lecture being given by my doctor, Dr. Jay. He’s an Ayurvedic doctor and one of the most impressive people I have ever met. He is so knowledgeable. Everything I have ever had a problem with the last four years he has taken care of for me. I love Ayurveda. It is the science of life. Things that Rishis and Ayurveda have known for thousands of years are just now being “discovered” by scientists. But I will stop here, lest I judge more. Have a beautiful day.
